Japanese cars and other imported goods continue to rise in the US, worrying our government about adverse effects on US industries and jobs lost. In the spring of 1968, on April 4th, Rev Martin Luther King, Jr is assassinated. Robert Kennedy is mortally wounded, shot by Sirhan Sirhan. The peace movement continues to grow as more Americans come out against the war in Vietnam. The music scene is set by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Women's fashion flirts with see-through blouses, while Midi and Maxi skirts join the Mini skirt as the latest fashion trends. A flu epidemic breaks out in Hong Kong. The first Black power salute is seen on worldwide television during an Olympics medal ceremony.

Pop Culture 1968:
  • The first Big Mac goes on sale in McDonalds. It costs 49 cents 
  • The Beatles create Apple Records and record Hey Jude as their first single on the new label 
  • The television news magazine 60 Minutes debuts on CBS 
  • Hair opens at Shaftesbury Theatre in London, featuring nudity and drug-use
